Atrocity στο Metal View: Ο κόσμος εξακολουθεί να είναι τυφλωμένος από θρησκευτικές και ακραίες πολιτικές ιδεολογίες

Οι Atrocity είναι από τις μπάντες που έδειξαν το δρόμο για το Γερμανικό death metal. Έχοντας ξεπεράσει τις τρεις δεκαετίες ύπαρξης, το Τευτονικό συγκρότημα, στο τέλος του χρόνου κυκλοφόρησε το ΕΡ του, "Masters Of Darkness" μιλώντας για τις σκοτεινές πτυχές της ανθρώπινης ιστορίας. Το Metal View επικοινώνησε με τον frontman τους Alex Krull και τον κιθαρίστα τους Tosso Bauer, σχετικά με το νέο πόνημα των Atrocity, το παρελθόν τους καθώς και τι μέλλει γεννέσθαι σχετικά με τους Leave's Eyes.
 


- Πρώτα απ'όλα γιατί χρειαστήκατε τέσσερα χρόνια για μια νέα δουλειά;

Alex: Έπειτα από την κυκλοφορία του πρώτου μέρους του "Okkult" κάναμε ένα παγκόσμιο tour σε πολλά μέρη και φεστιβάλ της Ευρώπης, στη Βόρεια και την Λατινική Αμερική, τη Ρωσία και την Ασία. Λίγους μήνες πριν παίξαμε για πρώτη φορα στη Λευκορωσία. Παράλληλα ασχολούμαστε και με την άλλη μας μπάντα, τους Leave's Eyes, όπου κυκλοφορήσαμε αρκετό υλικό και οεριοδεύσαμε κιόλας. 

Tosso: Επίσης έχουμε και το Mastersound Studio όπου εκεί ο Alex ασχολείται με την παραγωγή και για άλλες μπάντες. Εκτός αυτού είμαστε σε νέα δισκογραφική εταιρεία, τη Massacre Records, όπου κυκλοφορήσαμε κλασικά άλμπουμ μας από τα 90s όπως το "Blutt", "Willenskraft" και "Werk 80". Είμαστε πολύ ευχαριστημένοι με όλα αυτά, και κάπως έτσι δικαιολογείται που έχουμε να κυκλοφορήσουμε κάτι νέο από το 2013.

-Βλέπω πως το ΕΡ σας έχει λιγότερα πειραματικά στοιχεία, γιατί; Θέλατε να να κάνετε κάτι κοντά στις ρίζες σας;

Αlex: Η βίαιη πλευρά και τα πειραματικά μας στοιχεία όπως το "Werk 80", αποτελούν κομμάτι της ιστορίας των Atrocity. Είμαστε metal καλλιτέχνες χωρίς όρια, και για εμένα ο νούμερο 1 κανόνας για το metal, είναι η έννοια του "Breking The Law". Η τριλογία του "Okkult" θα συνδυάζει τις ρίχες μας με νέες μουσικές ιδέες. Λατρεύω το στιχουργικό κομμάτι του "Okkult" που ασχολείται με τα σκοτεινά μυστήρια του κόσμου. Με το ΕΡ μας, "Masters Of Darkness" η  μπάντα επιστρέφει με κάτι πολύ σκοτεινό. Το Okkult II που θα βγει τον Ιούλιο του 2018. Ετοιμαστείτε!

Tosso: Οι Atrocity είναι μια μπάντα που ξεπερνάει τα όρια, ώστε να κατακτήσει νέα μουσικά εδάφη, δεν αποτελέσαμε ποτέ μια μπάντα που επαναλαμβανόταν σε κάθε άλμπουμ. Πάντα φέρναμε με τη μουσική μας κάτι προοδευτικό και εναλλακτικό, φυσικά όμως είμαστε ριζωμένοι στο ακραίο metal. Βέβαια, προσπαθώντας να αποφύγουμε να γίνουμε βαρετοί και στάσιμοι, πάντα θέτουμε νέες περιπέτειες και ορίζοντες.  Το "Masters Of Darkness" δείχνει σαφώς ότι απολαμβάνει να ασχολείται με την ακραία και σκοτεινή μουσική.

-Βλέπω στο εξώφυλλο του δίσκου την εικόνα ενός Γερμανού στρατιώτη του Β Παγκοσμίου Πολέμου. Θέλατε κάπως έτσι να δηλώσετε το κακό ή το σκοτάδι;

Alex: Όπως η τριλογία του "Okkult", έτσι και το ΕΡ μας, ασχολείται με τα μυστήρια της παγκόσμιας ιστορίας μέσα από τις πιο σκοτεινές και άγριες πτυχε΄ές της ανθρωπότητας. Το Τρίτο Ράιχ και η απόκρυφη πλευρά του είναι ασφαλώς μέρος αυτού.

- Δηλαδή υπάρχει κάποιο concept στους στίχους; Ποιοι πραγματικά είναι οι "Masters Of Darkness";

Alex: Σαν history nerd που είμαι, ασχοήθηκα πολύ με τον αποκρυφισμό του Τρίτου Ράιχ. Το "Masters Of Darkness" περιγράφει την απόλυτη τρέλα εκείνης της περιόδου με την απάνθρωπη ιδεολογία και την παράλογη κοσμοθεωρία και ερμηνεία της παγκόσμιας ιστορίας. Το κομμάτι "Black Order" ασχολείται με τη "θρησκεία του αίματος" και τη "σημαία του αίματος".

-Πιστεύεις ότι οι καιροί μας είναι σκοτεινοί;

Alex: Όπως ξέρουμε δε ζούμε στον Μεσσαίωνα, και παρόλο που η ανθρωπότητα θα έπρεπε να πάρει μαθήματα από την ιστορία, παρατηρούμε ότι ο κόσμος δεν έμαθε τίποτα, και εξακολουθεί να είναι καταστροφικός και τυφλωμένος από κάποιες θρησκευτικές και ακραίες πολιτικές ιδεολογίες, όντας πιο άπληστος από ποτέ.

-Συνδυάζετε το death metal με διάφορα χορωδιακά μέρη. Νομίζω πως αυτό το στυλ κάνει τη μουσική σας πιο μεγαλοπρεπή. Συμφωνείτε;

Tosso: Ευχαριστώ πολύ, ναι προσωπικά συμφωνώ. Οι χορωδίες προσθέτουν μια βομβιστική και επική πλευρά στη μουσική. Ταυτόχρονα εμπλουτίζουν τη μουσική με ένα είδος vintage horror movie ατμόσφαιρας, το οποίο ταιριάζει απόλυτα με το σκοτεινό ύφος του ΕΡ "Masters Of Darkness", επομένως και του επόμενου άλμπουμ.


-Το 2018 κλείνετε 30 χρόνια από την κυκλοφορία του πρώτου σας demo. Πόσο δύσκολα ήταν εκείνα τα χρόνια, και ποιες οι σπουδαιότερες σας αναμνήσεις;

Alex: Mπορείς να πεις ότι ήταν δύσκολα χαχα. Κανείς δεν ήθελε να έχει κάποιο extreme metal συγκρότημα στα μέσα των 80s. Δεν έβριδκες ούτε promoter, ούτε κάποια στήριξη από περιοδικά, ούτε καν χώρο για πρόβες. Καταλήξαμε να παίζουμε στο γκαράζ μια ηλικιωμένης, η οποία μάλλον ήταν κουφή και δεν ήξερε τι παίζαμε χαχα. Πραγματικά πέρασε πολύς καιρός από τότε χαχα, και υπήρχαν προκλήσεις. Οι Atrocity το 1985 που δημιουργήθηκαν αποτελούνταν από σχολειαρόπαιδα και έγινε προάγγελος της Γερμανικής death metal σκηνής. Το demo μας "Instigators" ήταν το σύνολο των πρώτων μας τραγουδιών, των πιο ακραίων που είχαμε κάνει ποτέ. Θυμάμαι κάτι τρελές εμφανίσεις μας σε κάτι μικρά άσχημα clubs χαχαχα. Ήμασταν κομμάτι του underground και είχαμε επαφή με συγκροτήματα όπως οι Morbid Angel, Pungent Stench, Immortal και Entombed. Θυμάμαι επίσης που βοήθησα στην διοργάνωση του πρώτου Ευρωπαϊκού death metal φεστιβάλ, καθώς επίσης και την πρώτη Ευρωπαϊκή περιοδεία των Atrocity μαζί με τους Carcass το 1990.

Tosso: Κοιτάζοντας πίσω, παρατηρώ πόσες μπάντες επηρρεάστηκαν από τους Atrocity. Είναι αμέτρητες ι αναμνήσεις και οι εντυπώσεις μου όλα αυτά τα χρόνια. Το πιο αξέχαστο ήταν όταν έκανα την πρώτη μου περιοδεία το 1994 με Atrocity και Obituary. To να παίζω ξαφνικά σε μια μεγάλη περιοδεία σε όλη την Ευρώπη μπροστά σε τόσους ανθρώπους ήταν συναρπαστικό. Μόλις είχα τελειώσει το σχολείο και έμοιαζε σαν ένα όνειρο που έγινε πραγματικότητα. Πάντα έχουμε μερικά κλασικά κομμάτια στο set μας, όπως το "Necropolis" και το "Fatal Step". Είναι πάντα διασκεδαστικό!

-Ποια είναι τα σχέδια σας για το μέλλον; Να περιμένουμε κάποια περιοδεία;

Tosso: Τελειώνουμε με ότι έχει απομείνει για το "Οkkult II", το οποίο θα είναι έτοιμο στις αρχές του 2018, και θα κυκλοφορήσει τον Ιούλιο. Μετά θα ακολουθήσουν κάποια φεστιβάλ και περιοδεία.

-Τι να περιμένουμε από το επερχόμενο άλμπουμ σας με τους Leave's Eyes;

Tosso: Το "Sign Of The Dragonheart" είναι η μεγαλύτερη και πιο επική παραγωγή που έχουν κάνει οι Leave's Eyes, και για εμένα προσωπικά είναι ότι καλύτερο έχουμε κάνει ποτέ. Έπεσε πολύ σκληρή δουλειά για να γίνει αυτό το άλμπουμ , όλα τα όργανα και οι ήχοι είναι αληθινοί και δουλέψαμε ξανά με το Choirs Od London Voices, που είναι υπέυθυνο για τα soundtracks του Star Wars και του Lord Of The Rings. Eίμαστε η πρώτη metal μπάντα που συνεργάζεται μαζί τους και είναι πραγματικά υπέροχο. Κάναμε τις ηχογραφήσεις στη Λευκορωσία με πολλά παραδοσιακά όργανα. Το νέο άλμπουμ έχει πολλά καλά κομμάτια που είναι δύσκολο να αποφασίσουμε για βίντεο κλιπ ή για κάποιο σινγκλ. Το άλμπουμ έχει τεράστιο ήχο και και μερικές εκπλήξεις. Ανυπομονούμε να παίξουμε νέο υλικό στους οπαδούς μας.

-Ευχαριστώ για τη συνέντευξη, θέλετε να πείτε κάτι τελευταίο;

ΕNGLISH VERSION

-First of all, why you needed four years for a new work?

Alex: After the release of the first  "Okkult" we did a lot of worldwide touring. Tours, shows and festivals in Europe, North America, Latin America, Russia and Asia. A few months ago we have played the first time in Belarus. Besides that we also have our second band Leave's Eyes, and we brought out several releases in the meantime and did worldwide touring.

Tosso: We run Mastersound Studio, and Alex works as producer for other bands in the studio, too. In addition to that we also have a new record company, Massacre Records, on which the band released album classics like Blutt, Willenskraft or Werk 80 already in the 90s. We are very happy with this new album deal. All this together may explain the waiting time since our last release in 2013.

- I see that your EP has less experimental and atmospheric parts/ Why? Did you want to make something nearly to your roots?

Alex: Our brutal side and the more experimental stuff like the “Werk 80” albums are both part of the Atrocity history. We are metal artists without limits. For me the number one rule in metal is „Breaking the Law“. Our "Okkult" trilogy combines our roots with new musical ideas. I love the whole lyrical background of the “Okkult” trilogy about the dark mysteries in the world. With our new EP „Masters of Darkness“ the band returns with an epic brutal monster and this is dark harbringer of the „Okkult II“ album which will be released in July 2018!! Be prepared!

Tosso: Yes, Atrocity has always been a band that likes to push the boundaries and conquer new musical territories. We have never been a band that brings out the same kind of album over and over again. You can always hear progress, growth and change. Of course the band is rooted and feels home in extreme metal. But to avoid getting bored and stuck we always set for new horizons and musical adventures."Masters Of Darkness" clearly shows the band enjoying its core skills in brutal, extreme and dark music.

 
- I see on your front cover a figure of a WW2 German soldier. Did you want to provide the evil and darkness with this way?

Alex: The lyrical concept of the Okkult trilogy and the new EP "Masters of Darkness"  contains the mysteries of world history from the darkest eras of humanity and their abysmal malice. The Third Reich and its occult side are certainly a part of that.

-Do you have a lyrical concept on your EP? Who are the real masters of darkness?

Alex: As a history nerd, I also dealt with the occultism in the Third Reich. The title track "Masters of Darkness" describes its complete madness in that period of time and the associated inhuman ideology, the absurd world view and interpretation of world history. The "Black Order" united in the "religion of blood" and the oath on the "blood flag".

- Do you think that our times are dark?

Alex: Well, as you might think we are not living in the dark middle ages anymore and humantiy should have lerned its lessons from history, you realize that people learned nothing but still being destructive, blinded by relgious and extreme political views and becoming even more greedy than ever. 

-You combine your death metal with some choir parts, and with this style your music feels to me more majestic. Do you agree?

Tosso: Thank you very much. Yes, I agree. The choirs add a bombastic and epic side to the music. At the same time they enrich the album with a kind of “vintage horror movie” atmosphere, which works perfectly with the dark and mysterious concept of the new EP and also the next album, “Okkult II”.

 
- Next year you celebrate 30 years of your first demo. Which are your greatest memories from those days? How difficult were those years?

Alex: You can tell hahaha Nobody wanted to have an extreme metal band back in the mid 80's. No promoter, no magazine even finding a rehearsal place was an impossible mission! We ended up in a garage at a farm of an old lady – probably she was deaf and couldn't hear what music we were playing haha Wow, it's a really long time doing this band and it was always exciting that we came up with new musical challenges! Insane, Atrocity was formed already in 1985 as school kids and became the forerunners of the German Death Metal scene! The demo “Instigators” was actually a sum up of our first songs, we were actually becoming more extreme by then. From that time I remember some really crazy and fantastic shows in small rotten clubs haha. We were a big part of the Underground movement. Atrocity and I was there myself when it all started! We have been in personal contact with most of the bands from Morbid Angel, Pungent Stench, Immortal to Entombed. By the way I organized the first Euro Death Metal Festivals and our first Atrocity Euro tour together with UK legends Carcass in 1990. Great times! 

Tosso: Looking back it's awesome to see how many great artists got inspired by ATROCITY in the past and still nowadays. Besides there are countless memories of tours and shows worldwide. My most memorable was my first tour 1994 on the ATROCITY/ OBITUARY European tour when I joined the band. Playing suddenly a big tour in whole europe in front of lots of people was incredibly exciting for me. After just having finnished school it was like a dream come true:) We always have a few classic songs in our setlist like “Necropolis”, “Fatal Step” as well as a few others. Its always fun!

-Which are your plans for the future? Can we wait for a tour?

Tosso: We will finnish all the work like artwork, video for our next full album OKKULT II in early 2018. OKKULT II will be released in July 2018 and it will be followed by festival shows and then again touring world-wide.

 
- Also, what can we wait from your upcoming album with Leaves' Eyes?

Tosso: SIGN OF THE DRAGONHEAD is the biggest and most epic production LEAVES' EYES ever did, and in my personal opinion also the best.It was a lot of hard work to finnish this new album. All instruments and choirs are real, we used no plastic sounds. For example we worked, like on KING OF KINGS, with the LONDON VOICES CHOIRS, that also sung on the soundtracks of STAR WARS and LORD OF THE RINGS. We are the first metal band they ever worked with, which is really great! We did orchestra recordings in Belarus, as well as many native instruments like fiddles, uilleann pipes, Nykkelharpa in our own studio. The new album has tons of great songs and it was really hard to chose songs for a video clip or single. The album has a huge sound and also a few surprises. We can't wait to play the new song material live for our fans.
