Στη χώρα που μεσουράνησε το black metal, τα τελευταία χρόνια, έρχεται μια δύναμη, αυτή του underground death metal, μέσα από τη νέα γενιά. Οι Horrifier αποτελούν ένα από τα ανερχόμενα ονόματα στη Νορβηγική σκηνή, ορμώμενοι με αγνή σαπίλα και σκοτάδι, ευθύς από το Όσλο. Έτσι, το Metal View, μιλάει με την ίδια τη μπάντα σχετικά με το ντεμπούτο της "Horrid Resurrection".
-Πρώτα απ’ όλα, πώς είναι η ανταπόκριση στο ντεμπούτο άλμπουμ σας μέχρι στιγμής;
Νιώθουμε ότι ήταν συνολικά επιτυχημένη. Έχουμε λάβει πολλές κριτικές και προσοχή γύρω από το άλμπουμ, και αυτό μας οδήγησε επίσης σε μερικά πολύ ωραία live. Για παράδειγμα, παίξαμε στο Inferno Festival το 2024, καθώς και στο Hellbotn Festival, που είναι το μεγαλύτερο που έχουμε παίξει μέχρι τώρα.
-Ο ήχος σας ακούγεται τόσο old school αλλά ταυτόχρονα φρέσκος. Ήταν συνειδητή επιλογή να έχετε παλιά στοιχεία με μια σύγχρονη προσέγγιση και παραγωγή;
Ήταν συνειδητή επιλογή να παίξουμε old school death metal. Όσον αφορά την παραγωγή, ο λόγος που μπορεί να ακούγεται πιο μοντέρνα πιθανώς να είναι επειδή χρησιμοποιήσαμε σύγχρονο εξοπλισμό. Αυτό δεν σημαίνει ότι χρησιμοποιήσαμε προσομοίωση ενισχυτών, ή πολλά ψηφιακά στοιχεία· χρησιμοποιήσαμε πραγματικούς ενισχυτές, παρά μόνο το μιξάρισμα και το mastering έγιναν ψηφιακά.
-Είναι δύσκολο να παίξετε έναν χαρακτηριστικό old school death metal ήχο με μια πιο μοντέρνα ματιά ή σας βγαίνει φυσικά;
Δεν μας εμπνέουν πραγματικά σύγχρονες μπάντες, εκτός από εκείνες που ακούγονται old school, οπότε από τη δική μας οπτική δεν υπάρχει κάποια μοντέρνα ματιά σε αυτό, εκτός ίσως από την παραγωγή. Άρα, μάλλον μας βγαίνει φυσικά.
-Στα αυτιά μου, ο ήχος σας συνδυάζει το Leprosy των Death με τον ήχο των At The Gates και thrash στοιχεία. Συμφωνείτε; Αποτελούν μέρος των επιρροών σας;
Οι Autopsy έχουν πιθανότατα τη μεγαλύτερη επιρροή σε αυτό το άλμπουμ, ειδικά στα πιο αργά και σκοτεινά σημεία των τραγουδιών. Πραγματικά κατάφεραν να φέρουν μια πιο σκοτεινή ατμόσφαιρα στο death metal είδος, κάτι που πιστεύουμε ότι αναβαθμίζει τη μουσική· γι’ αυτό και αρκετά από τα τραγούδια μας έχουν αυτή τη σκοτεινή ατμόσφαιρα. Το άλμπουμ, φυσικά, είναι επίσης επηρεασμένο από άλλες μπάντες, όπως οι Death (δεν μπορείς να παίξεις death metal και να μην επηρεαστείς από αυτούς). Έχουμε επίσης επηρεαστεί από τη σουηδική death metal σκηνή, όχι τόσο από τους At The Gates, αλλά περισσότερο από τους Nihilist/Entombed και Dismember. Επίσης, η μπάντα Repulsion έχει ασκήσει μεγάλη επιρροή στο ντεμπούτο μας.
-Τα τραγούδια σας έχουν πολύ ποικιλο riffing και μελωδίες που δημιουργούν μια καταστροφική και σκοτεινή ατμόσφαιρα. Πιστεύετε ότι αυτή η τεχνική δίνει περισσότερη έκφραση στα συναισθήματα και στον χαρακτήρα της μουσικής σας;
-Υπάρχει κάποιο concept πίσω από τον τίτλο Horrid Resurrection; Κάτι σαν zombie apocalypse ή κάτι τέτοιο;
Το ομώνυμο τραγούδι είναι εμπνευσμένο από μια σκηνή της ταινίας The Return Of The Living Dead, όπου μια ομάδα ανθρώπων αιχμαλωτίζει έναν ζόμπι και τον δένει. Τον ρωτούν ερωτήσεις, και αποκαλύπτεται ότι αυτά τα ζόμπι έχουν ακόμα συνείδηση και δεν μπορούν να πεθάνουν, αλλά ζουν σε διαρκές μαρτύριο. Ο μόνος τρόπος να μειώσουν τον πόνο τους για λίγο είναι να τρώνε ανθρώπινα μυαλά. Αυτό μας ενέπνευσε να δημιουργήσουμε ένα επικό και μελαγχολικό τραγούδι που αντανακλά τους στίχους.
-Η Νορβηγία έχει τη φήμη ως η πρωτεύουσα του black metal, αλλά έχει επίσης μια εξαιρετική death metal σκηνή, με μπάντες όπως οι Cadaver, Blood Red Throne ή οι πιο πρόσφατες Nekromantheon και Obliteration. Πώς βλέπετε τη σκηνή εκεί ως μέρος της;
Ναι, υπάρχει πολύ black metal στη Νορβηγία, ωστόσο τα τελευταία χρόνια βλέπουμε μια αλλαγή ενδιαφέροντος εδώ στην πρωτεύουσα, όπου όλο και περισσότερες death metal μπάντες εμφανίζονται και κερδίζουν προσοχή. Υπάρχει επίσης το Oslo Deathfest, που είχε τη δεύτερη διοργάνωσή του το 2024, το οποίο βοηθά στη διάδοση του νορβηγικού death metal. Μερικές μπάντες που αξίζει να αναφερθούν από τη νεότερη σκηνή που κρατούν ζωντανό το underground εδώ στο Όσλο είναι οι Sovereign, Inchoation, Ruun, Impugner και Discord. Αναμφίβολα, βλέπουμε τον εαυτό μας ως μέρος του ήχου και της σκηνής του Όσλο, με τον thrashy death metal ήχο μας, και μας δέχονται ως έναν σοβαρό διεκδικητή του νέου κύματος death metal από τη Νορβηγία.
-Υπάρχουν σχέδια για νέο άλμπουμ;
Βρισκόμαστε στη φάση ολοκλήρωσης των τελευταίων λεπτομερειών του επόμενου άλμπουμ μας. Σχεδιάζουμε να το ηχογραφήσουμε τον Μάρτιο-Απρίλιο. Ωστόσο, σκοπεύουμε να κυκλοφορήσουμε κάτι άλλο πριν το πλήρες άλμπουμ, κατά τη διάρκεια του 2026. Πιθανότατα θα ανακοινώσουμε σύντομα κάτι σχετικά με μια μικρή κυκλοφορία μέσα στο 2025.
-Και η τελευταία μου ερώτηση, ποια είναι τα σχέδιά σας για το 2025;
Έχουμε ήδη κλείσει μερικές συναυλίες, αλλά όπως αναφέραμε, βρισκόμαστε στη διαδικασία σύνθεσης του δεύτερου άλμπουμ μας, οπότε αυτό μας απασχολεί πολύ. Συνεχίζουμε να δουλεύουμε για να διαδώσουμε τη μουσική μας σε νέα μέρη, οπότε αν κάποιος θέλει να μας κλείσει για εμφάνιση κοντά του, ας μας στείλει μήνυμα, και θα δούμε τι μπορούμε να κάνουμε. -First of all, how is the reaction on your debut album so far?
We feel that it was an overall success. We have gotten a lot of reviews and attention around the album and it also has led to a couple of really cool gigs. For example we played the Inferno festival back in 2024 as well as Hellboten festival which is the biggest we have played yet.
-Your sound sounds so old school but fresh at the same time. Was it a conscious decision for your playing style to have old elements with a modern approach and production?
It was a conscious decision to play old school death metal. When it comes to the production, the reason why it might sound more modern is probably because it is produced with modern equipment. It is not to say that we used amp modelers, we used real amps, but the mixing and mastering was done digitally.
-Is it difficult to play a trademarked old school death metal sound with a newer glance or came just naturally?
We aren’t really inspired by any modern bands, except for those who sound old school, so from our view there isn’t any newer glance to it other than in the production maybe. So I guess it just comes naturally.
-Your sound in my ears combines Death's Leprosy with At The Gates sound and thrashy fillings. Can you see the same? Are they a part of your influences?
The band Autopsy has probably been the biggest influence on this album, especially on the slower and darker parts of the songs.They really managed to bring a more dark atmosphere to the death metal genre which we think elevates the music, hence why several of our songs also have this dark atmosphere to them. The album is of course also influenced by other bands like Death (you cant play death metal and not be influenced by them). We have also been influenced by the swedish death metal scene, maybe not so much by At The Gates, but more like Nihilist/Entombed and Dismember. The band Repulsion has also been a major influence on our debut album.
-Your songs have a plenty of riffing styles and melodies that really make a destructive and dark atmosphere. Do you believe that this technique gives more expression to the feelings and the character of your music?
Yes we think that atmosphere and melody (done right) to some degree is a really underappreciated aspect in death metal. A lot of death metal focuses way too much on just speed, technicality and brutality, with the same boring “chugg chugg” type of riffs with cookie monster vocals over it. That is perhaps why we are so inspired by bands like Autopsy, because they have very dynamic songwriting and melodic guitar solos without it sounding too cheesy. Like they are a death metal band, but they have elements of thrash/punk, doom, and just weird psychedelic and almost proggy parts.
-Is there a concept behind the Horrid Resurrection title? Like a zombie apocalypse or sth?
The title-track is inspired by a scene from the movie The Return Of The Living Dead, where a group of humans capture a zombie and tie it down. They begin to ask it questions, and it is revealed that these zombies still have a consciousness and are unable to die, but that they are in constant agony, and the only way to sedate the pain for a while is to eat human brains. This inspired us to make a kind of epic and melancholic track that reflects the lyrics.
-Norway has the fame as the capital of black metal, but it has a great death metal scene as well with bands like Cadaver, Blood Red Throne or Cadaver from the past, or Nekromantheon and Obliteration now. How do you see the scene there as a part of it?
Yes there is a lot of black metal in Norway, however the last couple of years here in the capital we see a switch in interest where more death metal bands are popping up and getting attention. There is also the Oslo Deathfest that had their second edition in 2024 that helps the name of Norwegian Death metal! Some bands to mention form the newer scene that is contributing to making the underground alive here in Oslo. We have bands such as Sovereign, Inchoation, Ruun, Impugner and Discord. We absolutely see us a part of the Oslo sound and scene as in the trashy death metal sound and how we are accepted as a contender of the new wave of death metal from norway.
-Are there any plans for a new album?
We are in the midst of writing the finishing touches of our next album. We are planning to record the album in march-april. However we have a plan to release something else before the full length comes during 2026. We probably will announce something soon regarding a small release during 2025.
-And my last question, what are your plans for 2025?
We have a couple of gigs lined up but as mentioned earlier we are in the writing process of our second album so that takes up a lot of our time.
