Evil Invaders στο Metal View: Η διαφορετικότητα κάνει πάντα τα πράγματα πιο ενδιαφέροντα

 Κάφροι αλλά και παιδιά της διπλανής πόρτας, οι Βέλγοι Evil Invaders, επέστρεψαν με το δεύτερο τους πόνημα "Feed Me Violence". Όπως λέει και ο τίτλος οι speed/thrash metallers μας δίνουν βία με το τσουβάλι, και ο frontman τους, Joe, μας λέει λίγα λόγια για το ολόφρεσκο τους άλμπουμ.

- Πρώτα απ'όλα, θεωρώ ότι το ύφος του νέου σας άλμπουμ ταιριάζει απόλυτα με με τον τίτλο του. Νομίζω ότι είναι από τις πιο σκληρές κυκλοφορίες της φετινής χρονιάς. Συμφωνείτε;

Όταν γράφαμε αυτό το άλμπουμ, ήμασταν όντως πολύ νευρικοί. Πολύς από το θυμό που είχαμε μέσα μας, αξίζει να σημειωθεί πως βγήκε προς τα έξω μέσω του δίσκου. Για να είμαι ειλικρινής δεν έχω τσεκάρει κάποιο άλμπουμ πρόσφατα, για αυτό μου είναι και δύσκολο να μας συγκρίνω με άλλες μπάντες χαχα. Βέβαια όλα τα μέρη της κιθάρας, ακόμα και τα πιο ακουστικά και καθαρά, στα νέα μας τραγούδια είναι τα πιο επιθετικά που έχουμε γράψει ποτέ. Είναι ότι ακριβώς μας βγήκε εκείνη τη στιγμή.

-Πως σας φαίνεται πλέον το τελικό αποτέλεσμα; Ποια είναι η ανταπόκριση του κοινού στα νέα τραγούδια;

Είμαστε όλοι απολύτως ικανοποιημένοι όπως βγήκαν τα κομμάτια στο τέλος. Βέβαια κοιτάζοντας πίσω, στη διάρκεια των ηχογραφήσεων σίγουρα θα βρούμε σημεία που στο μέλλον θα μπορέσουμε να τα βελτιώσουμε, αυτό δείχνει ότι ακόμα δεν έχουμε φτάσει και στην κορυφή των δυνατοτήτων μας.  Παρόλα αυτά όμως καταφέρμαε να βγάλουμε ένα cool vibe  σε κάθε τραγούδι και έτσι όλα τα κομμάτια μεταξύ τους αναμιγνύονται χωρίς να κάνουν κουραστικό το αποτέλεσμα. Όσον αφορά τις κριτικές, έχουμε ακούσει τα καλύτερα για τα νέα μας τραγούδια και ακούγονται πραγματικά καλα και live. Yπάρχουν πολλές στιγμές που ο κόσμος κραυγάζει τον ρυθμό και νομίζω πως καταλαβαίνουν ότι όλα είναι τραγούδια που βγαίνουν κατευθείαν από την καρδιά.

- Το "Feed Me Violence" νομίζω πως είναι ένας συνδυασμός από τη bay area thrash σκηνή αλλά και από το κλασσικό heavy metal. Ποιες είναι οι επιρροές σας; Να φανταστώ μια από αυτές είναι και οι Razor;

Για να είμαι ειλικρινής πέραν του ονόματος μας που το εμπνευστήκαμε από τους Razor, δεν μας επηρρέασαν ιδιαίτερα παραπάνω. Η παλιά bay area σκηνή είναι η αγαπημένη μου στο thrash, αλλά μου αρέσει να επηρρεάζομαι και από μπάντες όπως οι Black Sabbath, oι Judas Priest και οι Iron Maiden κτλ. Γενικότερα ακούω πράγματα από όλο το φάσμα του metal, όπως Doom, Progressive, Death ή Hard Rock. 

Noμίζω πως αν η επιροή σου είναι μόνο από ένα μουσικό είδος και γράφεις κομμάτια εμπνευσμένα αποκλειστικά από αυτό, τότε βαλτώνεις και καταλήγεις να αντιγράφεις όσα ήδη έχουν παιχτεί. Προσωπικά μου αρέσει αν γράφω νέα πράγματα που θα φέρνουν πολλά περισσότερα από απλό thrash metal. Αν ακούσει κανείς κομμάτια σαν το "Broken Dreams In Isolation", "Oblivion", ή το "Shades Of Solitude" θα καταλάβει τι εννοώ. Δεν είναι αυτό που περιμένει κανείς από μια μπάντα που θεωρητικά ασχολείτε με το thrash. Αυτό είναι κιόλας, νομίζω, που μας κάνει να ξεχωρίζουμε λίγο παραπάνω από άλλες μπάντες. Δίνει μια διαφορετική διάσταση στη μουσική της μπάντας, που την καθιστά ενδιαφέρουσα.

-Πόσο δύσκολο είναι δηλαδή να γράφεις κομμάτια χωρίς να αντιγράφεις όμως μεγάλες metal μπάντες;

Λοιπόν νομίζω πως είναι σημαντικό να  βρεις cool επιρροές από διαφορετικά είδη. Είναι θετικό επίσης να μοιράζονται ιδέες και να γράφονται κομμάτια από όλα τα μέλη της μπάντας επειδή θα έχουν πάντα διαφορετική οπτική. Η διαφορετικότητα κάνει πάντα τα πράγματα πιο ενδιαφέροντα. 

-Πιστεύεις ότι η μουσική σας είναι old school αλλά με μια πιο μοντέρνα οπτική;

Θεωρώ πως αυτός ο χαρακτηρισμός ταιριάζει πολύ στη μπάντα. Είμαστε όλοι οπαδοί του παλιού υλικού αλλά ξέρουμε ότι η εποχή που ζούμε βασίζεται στις νέες μπάντες. Όπως είπα συνδυάζουμε όλα τα είδη μουσικής που μας αρέσουν για αυτό και τα τραγούδια μας δεν ακούγονται ουτε παλιά ούτε νέα. Ο στόχος μου με τη μπάντα είναι να περάσουμε κάτι διαχρονικό.

- Προσωπικά λατρεύω τα 2 instrumental που έχετε γιατί είναι αρκετά τεχνικά. Πως αποφασίσατε να βάλετε δύο στον δίσκο σας;

Για εμένα προσωπικά υπάρχει μόνο ένα instrumental στο album, που είναι το "Shades Of Solitude". Όσον αφορά το "Suspended Reanimation" είναι το intro για το "Broken Dreams In Isolation". Μια μέρα λοιπόν έρχεται με την ιδέα του κομματιού ο Max, και αρχικά αν θυμάμαι καλά θέλαμε να του βάλουμε φωνητικά. Τελικά είδαμε ότι δεν ήταν απαραίτητο γιατί ακουγόταν όπως πρέπει και χωρίς λόγια και το κρατήσαμε ως έχει. Είναι μια ωραία προσθήκη πριν τα δύο τελικά κομμάτια τα οποία είναι αρκετά έντονα.

 

- Από τι βρίσκετε έμπνευση; Το "Feed Me Violence" είναι concept album;

Εμπνεόμαστε από καθε τι γύρω μας, κυρίως όμως από οτιδήποτε υπάρχει στην καθημερινότητα μας. Η κατάθλιψη, η απογοήτευση, το συναίσθημα της κακοτυχίας και ότι σκατά κλείνει το δρόμο μας. Τα παίρνουμε όλα πάνω μας, έτσι ώστε να μην αφήσουμε τίποτα να μας ρήξει κάτω.

Το "Feed Me Violence" δε θα έλεγα πως είναι κάποιο concept album, αλλά αν κοιτάξεις εις βάθος τους στίχους μας θα δεις πολλά πράγματα. Λειτουργεί σαν ένα "roller coaster" που σε πηγαίνει από το ένα συναίσθημα στο άλλο όπως γίνεται και εμ τις στιγμές της ζωής μας.

-Πως βλέπετε τη speed/thrash metal σκηνή στις μέρες μας;

Νομίζω ότι πολλά από τα νέα συγκροτήματα ακούγονται ίδια, αντιγράφοντας οτιδήποτε έχει παιχτεί και πιο πριν. Δεν έχουν κάποια ξεχωριστή ταυτότητα ή ηχο. Αν συγκρίνουμε το τότε με το τώρα θα δούμε πως δε θα βρεις τραγουδιστές σαν τον Ozzy, τον Lemmy, τον Dio, τον Ηalford, τον Baloff ή τον Bon Scott....όλοι αυτοί είχαν κάτι μοναδικό στη μουσική και την προσωπικότητα τους. Μου λείπουν πραγματικά καλλιτέχνες όπως εκείνης της εποχής.

-Nα περιμένουμε καμιά συναυλία στην Ελλάδα;

Θα το ήθελα πολύ να παίξω ξανά στο μέλλον για εσάς. Είχαμε παίξει για πρώτη φορά σε εσάς το 2013 και νομίζω πως έχει φτάσει η στιγμή να το ξανακάνουμε. Θα ήταν υπέροχο να παίζαμε άλλη μια φορά σε κάποιο festival στην Ελλάδα.

- Ποια είναι τα σχέδια σας για το μέλλον;

Αυτή την περίοδο θα ξεκινήσουμε το βέλγικο κομμάτι της περιοδείας για το "Feed Me Violence" όπου θα είμαστε support των Channel Zero για 6 shows. Μετά από αυτό θα πετάξουμε για Κολομβία, που θα παίξουμε στο Metal Milennium και έπειτα θα πάμε Μεξικό. Έχουμε σχεδιάσει για την άνοιξη του 2018 ένα headline tour σε Ρωσία και Ανατολική Ευρώπη, και φυσικά κάποια φεστιβάλ του καλοκαιριού.

- First of all, I think that your new album suits perfect with the title...I think that is one of the year's most aggressive metal albums. Do you agree?

When we wrote the songs we were pretty pissed off indeed. A lot of the anger that was inside of us got recorded onto this record and that's clearly noticeable. To be honest I didn't check out any new albums this year so it's hard to compare it to other bands haha. But, even with all the acoustic and clean guitar parts, the new songs are definitely the most aggressive ones we've written so far. It's just what we felt like at the moment.

- How do you feel for the final result? What's the fans reactions on your new songs?

We're really satisfied with how the songs turned out to be in the end. Of course, looking back at it you always see aspects of the recording process that can be improved in the future but that shows that we're not at the summit of our capabilities yet! We managed to capture a cool vibe for every song and I like the way how this album is mixed in a way that it's not tiring to listen to. We've had nothing but good reactions to our new songs and the songs work really well live. There are plenty of moments where the crowd screams along to the rhythm. I think people really feel that these songs are real and straight from the heart and they can relate to it.

-"Feed Me Violence" I think that has many bay area thrash elements and a classic metal feeling. Which are your influences? I think one of them is Razor 

To be honest, apart from the inspiration for a band name ,Razor didn't have a big influence in the songwriting for this band. The old bay area scene is definitely my favorite of the thrash section. But we like to get influenced by the older bands such as Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Iron maiden, etc. In general by bands in different genres such as Doom-, Progressive- and Death metal or Hard Rock.
If you write songs inspired by bands in the same genre you often get stuck in the same routine and you will sound like a copy of what's already been done before. We like to create something unique that will remind you of more than just Thrash metal. If you listen to songs such as “Broken Dreams in Isolation”, “Oblivion” or “Shades of Solitude” you will quickly hear what I mean. It's not what you would expect from a band that's been pushed into the Thrash metal box at all and I think that's what separates us a bit from the other bands. It gives a new dimension to the band and keeps it interesting.

-How difficult is to write new music, without copying great bands of Metal?
Well I think the trick is to combine a lot of cool influences from different bands. It's cool to write songs with the other band members input because they always have a different view on things and they approach songs from different points of view so that can be pretty interesting. 

- Do you think that you play an old school music with a modern option?

I think that describes this band pretty well. We're all fans of the old stuff but we're aware of the time we're living in and we get inspired by modern bands as well. We combine all the styles of music we like in our songs and that's why we don't sound old nor new. My goal with this band is to create something timeless.

 

-I love your instrumental songs with their technics. How you decided to have 2 of them on your album?
To me personally this album has just one fully instrumental song which is Shades of Solitude. “Suspended Reanimation” is the intro to “Broken Dreams in Isolation”. One day Max just came up with the idea of the song. I think initially we wanted to have vocals over it but in the end it was not necessary. The song was perfect as it was instrumentally so we just kept it like that. It's a nice progression towards the last 2 songs on the record which are pretty intense. 

- From what things you found inspiration? Feed Me Violence is a concept album?

We get inspiration from all kinds of things. But mainly the things that happen in our daily lives. Depression, frustrations, dealing with bad luck or any kind of shit that comes your way. Getting back up and not allowing anything to grind you down.
I wouldn't say Feed me Violence is a concept album but if you check out the lyrics of the songs on the record you will see a lot of links to what the songs are about.
It's a bit like a roller coaster ride that takes you through different emotions and moments in your life.

 

-How do you see the speed/thrash metal nowadays?

I think a lot of the new bands sound the same and just copy something that's been done before. They lack a unique identity and sound. If you compare artists these days to the ones from before... Where's today's Ozzy, Lemmy, Dio, Halford, Baloff, Bon Scott, ... These guys had something unique to their music and personality. I really miss artists like that these days.

- Can we wait for a live show in Greece?

I hope to play there once again in the future of course!!! We've only been there once and I think that was 2013. So it's definitely time that we fly over again! It would be great to play some festivals in Greece!

- What are your plans for the future?

Right now we're gonna start our Belgian wing of the Feed Me Violence tour where we'll be supporting Channel Zero for 6 Shows. After that we'll be flying over to Colombia to play the Metal Milennium festival and we're planning to hit Mexico straight after that! We have planned a headlining tour through Eastern Europe and Russia in spring and confirmed some kick-ass summer festivals for 2018 already.
