VISIGOTH-CONQUEROR'S OATH (Abum Review)

Έχουν περάσει μόλις λίγες μέρες μετά την κυκλοφορία αυτού του δίσκου και έχει ήδη αφήσει το στίγμα του στο heavy metal. Ήταν 2015 όταν ξεκίνησε η μπάντα, μετά από την κυκλοφορία του ντεμπούτου της που όρισε όλο τον ήχο των Visigoth, και επιτέλους έφτασε στα χέρια μου αυτός ο νέος γόνος φωτιάς και σφυριών.

Οι Visigoth δεν έχουν αλλάξει το στυλ τους κατά τη διάρκεια της απουσίας τους. Είναι 100% heavy metal ακολουθώντας το μονοπάτι των Manowar, Manilla Road και Cirith Ungol. Αποτελείται από παραμύθια για τους γενναίους και τους ήρωες, μαίνουσα φωτιά και σφυροκοπήματα ατσαλιού, σπαθιών και μάχες. Το πρώτο κομμάτι “Steel and Silver” είναι ένας ύμνος στο true metal: ξεσηκωτικά riffs, μελωδία και φωνητικά που καλούν στα όπλα. Το κομμάτι είναι σχεδιαμσένο γιανα ξυπνάει τον εσωτερικό πολεμιστή σε κάθε έναν από μας και δημιουργεί μία επική ατμόσφαιρα μάχης. Τα επόμενα κομμάτια “Warrior Queen” και το προσωπικά αγαπημένο μου “Outlive Them All” είναι ακριβώς ακόλουθοι του προοιμίου του δίσκου, όλα τους κορυφαία στάνταρ εμβατήρια μάχης που κάνουν το αίμα να οργιάζει. Υπάρχουν πολλές ομοιότητες με Grand Magus και Iron Maiden, και οι λίγες μελαγχολικές μελωδίες διασκορπισμένες μέσα στα κομμάτια θυμίζουν σίγουρα Cirith Ungol.

Το επόμενο κομμάτι, “Hammerforged” είναι άλλος ένας ύμνος στον ηρωισμό. Μέχρι στιγμής τίποτα δεν έχει αλλάξει στον στάνταρ ήχο της μπάντας, που πιάνει ακριβώς την παλιά μέταλ μαγεία, ωσάν η μπάντα να είχε σχηματιστεί αρκετές δεκαετίες πριν και περιλαμβάνει Maiden-ικές κιθαριστικές μελωδίες και καθαρά φωνητικά. Το “Traitor’s Gate”, παρόλα αυτά, αλλάζει λίγο την ατμόσφαιρα. Ξεκινάει περισσότερο σαν μια επική πολεμική μπαλάντα, μόνο και μόνο για να εξελιχθεί και να κορυφωθεί σε ένα Manowar-ικό εμβατήριο. Η εντύπωση που μου άφησε αυτό το κομμάτι είναι ότι, ενώ οι Visigoth προσπαθούν να κρατήσουν τον παλιό κλασσικό heavy metal ήχο, κρατούν τον ακροατή σε αγωνία και δεν γίνονται μονότονοι ή να επαναλαμβάνονται.

To “Salt City” παίρνει μια εντελώς διαφορετική κατεύθυνση, και μοιάζει περισσότερο με ένα 90s ροκ χιτάκι των KISS, παρά με πολεμικό ύμνο και έχει μια εντελώς διαφορετική αίσθηση. Σίγουρα δεν σπάει την αλυσίδα των κομματιών και ήταν μια ευχάριστη παύση από την πολεμική ατμόσφαιρα. Με τα “Blades of the Night” και “Conqueror’s Oath”, η μπάντα έρχεται ξανά πίσω στην επική heavy metal ατμόσφαιρα για να τελειώσει το δίσκο. Σαν τελικό αποτέλεσμα, είναι αξιοσημείωτο ότι το γράψιμο και η στιχουργική των κομματιών είναι πολύ καλά φτιαγμένα, οι αρμονίες εξαιρετικά καλά παιγμένες και τα τραγούδια είναι σύντομα και εύκολα να μνημονευτούν. Είναι σίγουρα μια μπάντα που μπορεί αν διακριθεί από τις υπόλοιπες του ίδιου είδους, όπως οι Omen και οι Manowar, χωρίς όμως να αντιγράφουν είτε να μιμούνται τον ήχο, αλλά περισσότερο να εμμένουν σε ένα παλιομοδίτικο heavy metal στυλ που είναι αληθινό ως το κόκαλο. Δεν είναι κάτι νέο σε αυτά που ήδη ξέρουμε, αλλά είναι μια καλή προσθήκη στη συλλογή και μια πολύ καλή μπάντα για να ακούσει κανείς που θυμίζει τις παλιές καλές μέρες.

Just a few days after this album has been released and it has already made an impact on the heavy metal genre. It was 2015 since the uprising of this band, after a release of a debut the defined the whole Visigoth sound and finally, we got our hands on this new breed of fire and hammer.

Visigoth have not changed their style during this absence; it is 100% heavy metal following the path of Manowar, Manilla Road and Cirith Ungol. It all comprises of tales for the brave and the heroic, raging fire and hammering steel, swords and battles. The first song “Steel and Silver” is an anthem to true metal: the rousing riffs, the melody, the vocals calling to arms. The song is designed to awaken the inner warrior to each one of us and create an epic battle atmosphere. The following songs “Warrior Queen” and my personal favourite “Outlive Them All” are exactly a follow-up of the preamble of the album, all of them top-notch battle standard songs that anger the blood. There are a lot of similarities to Grand Magus and Iron Maiden, and the few melancholic melodies spread across the tracks are definitely reminiscent of Cirith Ungol.

The next song, “Hammerforged” is another hymn to heroism. So far, nothing has much changed in the band’s standard sound, capturing the old metal magic, like the band was formed several decades ago and endorsing Maiden-esque guitar harmonies and clear-cut epic vocals. “Traitor’s Gate”, however changes slightly the atmosphere. It starts more as an epic war ballad, only to escalate to a Manowar-like battle hymn. The impression I got form this song is that while Visigoth try to keep the old classic heavy metal sound, they still keep the listener on the edge and do not become monotonous or repetitive.

“Salt City” takes a whole other different direction, resembling more a KISS 90’s aggressive rock banger, rather than a war anthem, which has an entirely different feel to it. It is definitely not breaking the chain of the song follow-up and was a rather pleasant break from the battle atmosphere. In “Blades of the Night” and “Conqueror’s Oath”, the band comes back to the epic heavy metal atmosphere to finish off the record. As a final point, it is very noticeable that the song-writing and the lyrics are quite well done, the harmonies extremely carefully played and the songs are short and very memorable. It is definitely a band that can be made out from the rest of the same-style ones, like Omen and Manowar, without them copying or mimicking the sound, but rather sticking to a classic and old-fashioned heavy metal style that is true to the bone. They are for sure nothing new to what we know, but they are a good add-on to the collection and a nice band to listen to that reminds of the good old days.
