Call From Subconscious-Sorrow And Avidity (Review)

Οι Call From Subconscious μας ήρθαν κάπου στη δεκαετία του 90', όταν οι δεσμοί του underground γίνονταν όλο και πιο σφιχτοί στην Ευρώπη. Για μόνο μια τετραετία στα δρώμενα, και συγκεκριμένα από το 1993 έως το 1997, μας χάρισαν δύο demo κυκλοφορίες που χώρεσαν μπόλικα ετερόκλιτα με τον doom/death χαρακτήρα, στοιχεία, τα οποία μάλιστα μπορούσαν να φτιάξουν στην πορεία και τον ήχο τους. Το τέλος βέβαια φάνηκε άδοξο, αλλά φέτος όλα αυτά "ανασταίνονται" με τα "Fading Flowers" και "Inner Dimensions" να μπαίνουν σε μια μοναδική συλλογή της Repulsive Echo, για μυημένους οπαδούς.

Σαν να ξεθάβουμε αρχαιότητες, το "Sorrow And Avidity" βγάζει στο φως ξεχασμένες στιγμές του ακραίου χώρου, με το Γερμανικό συγκρότημα μέσα από τις δύο κυκλοφορίες του να ανταγωνίζεται και να κοιτά κατάματα τις underground υπάρξεις των πλέον μεγαθήριων, My Dying Bride, Paradise Lost, Anathema αλλά και πιο "χωμένων" ονομάτων όπως οι τεχνικοί και σκοτεινοί Edge Of Sanity του Dan Swano ή οι Gorement. Eκτός αυτού όμως, οι πειραματισμοί που έφεραν στο προσκήνιο δεν ήταν λίγοι, κάνοντας την Μεσαιωνική ατμόσφαιρα, με τα φλάουτα και τους λυρισμούς, σύγχρονη, ειδικά στο ομώνυμο της εν λόγω συλλογής με μια μακάβρια και συνάμα έλεγκαντ διάθεση. 

Ακόμα πιο σκληραγωγημένοι και μαύροι, πέρα από τις doom και δαιδαλώδεις καταβολές τους, φαίνονται στο δεύτερο μισό, με τα κομμάτια της δεύτερης δουλειάς του, όπου η ομορφιά του σκότους συναντά το χάος της αβύσσου, και η χαρά της φύσης την καταστροφή. Σαν σύνολο, μέσα από κομμάτια σαν τα "Nosferatu" και "Anguish To Live" η αγριάδα δείχνει τα δόντια της με ξυραφιασμένες κιθάρες κόντρα στο "Sadistic Life Inside" και "White Funeral" που δείχνουν πιο αρμονικά και λιγότερο δύστροπα, φέρνοντας την ισορροπία, ενώ γενικά η μελωδία αποτελεί ατού των Τευτόνων. Μάλιστα η ακατέργαστη και ωμή ψυχή του γκρουπ περνά αβίαστα στο σύνολο αναβιώνοντας την απόλυτη 90ιλα και τον όλο ρομαντισμό της δεκαετίας.

Είναι όμορφο να μαθαίνεις μπάντες που άφησαν έστω και για λίγο το στίγμα τους, και έβαλαν το λιθαράκι τους στον ακραίο χώρο της μουσικής μας, ενώ είναι ακόμα καλύτερο όταν μια δουλειά σαν το "Sorrow And Avidity" προκαλεί το συναίσθημα της νοσταλγίας, σε τέτοιο βαθμό, που οι ήχοι αγγίζουν. Μακριά από τον best off χαρακτήρα παρόμοιων κυκλοφοριών, εδώ έχουμε στην ολότητα τους με όσες ομοιότητες και διαφορές υπάρχουν μεταξύ τους, τα μοναδικά δείγματα του Βαυαρικού σχήματος, μπλέκοντας την αγάπη, το μίσος, τον πόνο και τη μελαγχολία σε ένα. Kλείνοντας, ο γράφοντας μένει με την απορία πόσο πιο μακριά θα είχαν φτάσει αν δεν "κατέβαζαν ρολά" τόσο νωρίς, και τι άλλο θα μας χάριζαν, ορμώμενοι με ιδέες φρέσκιες και ιδιαίτερες. Μαζί με αυτές τις σκέψεις, η ωμή τους, σπαρακτική μουσική μένει στα ηχεία.

Call From Subconscious emerged around the 90's, when the bonds of the underground scene became more and more tight around Europe. While being active for only 4 years, they offered us 2 demos that included several diverse elements, that would determine the band's character and doom/death sound.

The end of the band was ignominious, but in 2021 the 2 demos are being "resurrected", as Repulsive Echo will include them in a unique compilation, for die hard fans. 

Compared to digging up ancient antiquities, "Sorrow and Avidity" drags forgotten moments of the extreme sound, with the German band competing with -then undergound, now huge- bands like My Dying Bride, Paradise Lost, Anathema as well as more "unoticed" bands like the technical and dark Dan Swano's Edge Of Sanity or Gorement, and looking them straight in the eye. Apart from that, however, the experiments they brought to the foreground were not few, making the Medieval atmosphere, with flutes and lyricism, to sound modern, especially in the homonymous track of this collection with a macabre and at the same time elegant mood.

In the second half (Fading flowers demo) they sound even more hardened and black, beyond their doom and labyrinthine origins that appear, in their pieces of this second work. Where the beauty of darkness meets the chaos of the abyss, and the joy of nature the destruction. The band as a whole shows their savage teeth through tracks like "Nosferatu" and "Anguish To Live" with razor guitars. Against that "Sadistic Life Inside" and "White Funeral" look more harmonious and less awkward, bringing a balance, while in general the melody is a hidden ace of the Teutons. In fact, the unprocessed and raw soul of the group embraces the listener effortlessly , reviving the absolute 90s spirit and the whole romance of that decade.

It's nice to learn bands that have left their mark, even for a small period of time, and put their little stone in the extreme side of our music. It is even better when a deathwork like "Sorrow And Avidity" evokes the feeling of nostalgia, to such an extent , that the sound touches the soul. Far from a «best of» character of such releases, here we have in their entirety, with all the similarities and differences between them, the unique samples of the Bavarian band who managed to mix love, hate, pain and melancholy all into one. In closing, the writer is left wondering how far they would have gone if they had not dissolved so early, and what else they would have given us, rushing with fresh and special ideas. With these thoughts, their raw, heartbreaking music echoes through the speakers.
