MIDNIGHT-SWEET DEATH AND ECSTASY (Album Review)

Μετά από αρκετά split albums και 3 χρόνια αναμονής, οι Αμερικανοί metallers Midnight επιτέλους κυκλοφόρησαν τον τρίτο τους δίσκο με όνομα Sweet Death and Ecstasy. Οι Midnight ήταν πάντα μία μπάντα που ξεπερνούσε κάθε προσδοκία με το να παίζει ενάντια στους κανόνες. Ο black n roll ήχος τους είναι ένα χαρακτηριστικό που παίζει με το μυαλό του ακροατή και βγάζει ένα σκοτεινό σατανικό συναίσθημα, από το οποίο σίγουρα δε μπορείς να ξεφύγεις από τη στιγμή που μπλέξεις. Το Sweet Death and Ecstasy είναι σίγουρα ένα album που έχει το ίδιο βαλτώδες και βεβηλωτικό χαρακτηριστικό και πρέπει να προειδοποιήσω να ετοιμαστείτε να «ανατιναχθείτε» από τα διεστραμμένα riffάκια.

Το πρώτο κομμάτι, Crushed by Demons, που ξεκινάει με ένα εντυπωσιακό σόλο δημιουργεί το ίδιο Midnight αίσθημα που έχουμε συνηθίσει από το Satanic Royalty και το No Mercy for Mayhem. Είναι αμέσως προφανές ότι οι Midnight προσκολλώνται στα ίδια σκοτεινά riffs και στα black n roll φωνητικά και δεν πρωτοτυπούν και πολύ μουσικά, αλλά η σύνθεση και το γράψιμο είναι αξιοσημείωτα καλοφτιαγμένα, ενώ η εκτέλεση του κομματιού είναι φοβερά ακριβής, το οποίο είναι ακριβώς αυτό που κάνει το album ένα τόσο συναρπαστικό κομμάτι για να ακούσει κανείς. Παρόλα αυτά, αντίθετα σε αυτά που έχουμε συνηθίσει ως τώρα, το κομμάτι είναι κάπως αργό σε σχέση με τα γνήσια αρχικά κομμάτια των προηγηθέντων album, καταλαμβάνοντας το μεγαλύτερο μέρος της πλευράς Α.

Ακολουθώντας είναι το Penetratal Ecsatsy. Μετά από το κάπως μεγάλο πρώτο κομμάτι (όχι ότι δεν το απόλαυσα και έτσι) έρχεται ένα άμεσο χτίσιμο ταχύτητας και επιθετικότητας. Η γρήγορη κιθάρα, τα riff που θυμίζουν Motorhead και τα τρελαμένα σόλο σίγουρα φέρνουν πίσω το συναίσθημα Midnight που χρειαζόμασταν μετά από τόσα χρόνια αδράνειας. Όσο και αν κάποιος θέλει να αρνηθεί τη διεστραμμένη μεγαλοπρέπεια της μπάντας, είναι δύσκολο να το χορτάσεις και να αντισταθείς στο να βγάλεις το χέρι το χέρι σου από το αιματοβαμμένο βάζο με το μέλι.

Τα επόμενα κομμάτια, Here Comes Sweet Death, Melting Brain and Rabid!, είναι σίγουρα στο ίδιο μήκος κύματος με τα προηγούμενα. Είναι όλα κλασσικοί metal ύμνοι, το πρώτο λίγο πιο αργό, τα επόμενα δύο γρήγορα και σύντομα. Συγκεκριμένα το Rabid! ανεβάζει το παιχνίδι με ένα σούπερ catchy blackened thrash τόνο στην κλασσική υπογραφή Midnight, τα αιματοβαμμένα ξόρκια. Αυτά τα κομμάτια συνδυάζουν το παλιό με το καινούργιο, έχουν κάποια μέρη πιο αργά και αρκετά πιο γρήγορα, εξισορροπώντας το παλιό rock n roll με περισσότερο μοντέρνα κομμάτια και εκπληκτικά σόλο.

Τα δύο τελευταία κομμάτια, Bitch Mongre! και Poison Trash δεν είναι εξαίρεση στον κανόνα. Το black n roll στα καλύτερά του με τους Midnight να μας υπενθυμίζουν ποιο είναι το αληθινό νόημα του rock n roll και να προβάλουν μια φοβερή και καλογραμμένη συλλογή από κομμάτια. Παρόλο που το album δεν είναι τίποτα καινούργιο σε αυτό που έχουμε συνηθίσει από τη μπάντα, είναι σίγουρα μία επακριβής εξέλιξη στον αιματοβαφή θρίαμβο της ταυτότητας της μπάντας και είναι σίγουρα ένας από τους καλύτερους δίσκους του 2017. Οι Midnight σε αρπάζουν από το λαιμό και σε βάζουν να ασχοληθείς με το δίσκο που σίγουρα αξίζει ένα άκουσμα – ή και δέκα. Οι παλιοί φαν θα βρουν ότι η Midnight δίνη είναι ακόμα ζωντανή ενώ οι νέοι φαν δεν θα μπορέσουν να χορτάσουν ποτέ το να ακούν αυτό το δίσκο.

After numerous split albums and 3 years of waiting, USA metallers Midnight have finally released their third full length album named Sweet Death and Ecstasy. Midnight has always been a band that exceeded expectations by playing against the rules. Their black n roll sound is a trademark that fucks with the listener and that delivers a dark and obscure satanic feeling, from which you can definitely not run away from once you get engaged with it. Sweet Death and Ecstasy is definitely an album that has the same sort of murky and gloriously defiling catch to it and I have to warn you, prepare to have your mind blown by the twisted riffs.

First song, Crushed by Demons, beginning with an impressive solo sets out the same Midnight feeling we were used to in Satanic Royalty and No Mercy for Mayhem. It is immediately obvious that Midnight stick to the same obscure riffs and their black n roll vocals and are not really breaking the ground musically, but the composition and the song writing is remarkably well done, and the execution of the track is amazingly precise and on spot, which is exactly what makes this album such an exciting piece to listen to. However, contrary to what we are used to so far, this song is a bit slow than the original starter songs of its predecessors, taking up the majority of side A.

Following up is Penetratal Ecstasy. After the rather long first song (not that even so I didn’t enjoy it) there is an immediate build up of speed and aggression. The fast guitar, the Motorhead-tastic riffage and the crazed solos definitely bring up all of the Midnight feeling that we needed all those years of inactivity. As much as somebody would like to deny the perverted majesty of the band, it’s hard to get enough of it and resist taking your hand out of the gory jar of honey.

The next songs, Here Comes Sweet Death, Melting Brain and Rabid!, are definitely on the same track as the previous one. They are all classic metal anthems, the first a bid slower, the two latter fast and short. In particular, Rabid! takes the game up a notch by a super catchy blackened thrash tone in the classic Midnight signature, the gory charms. These songs combine the old with the new, they have a few slower parts and a number of faster ones, counterbalancing the old rock n roll feeling with more modern parts and breath taking solos.

Last two tracks, Bitch Mongre! and Poison Trash are no exception to the rule. Black n roll at its finest, Midnight remind us what the true point of rock n roll is and showcase an amazing collection of tracks. Although this album is nothing new in what we are used to from the band, it is definitely a spot on evolution in the gory triumph of the band’s identity and it is definitely one of the most amazing records of 2017. Midnight grab you by the throat and engage you to an album that is definitely worth a listen – or ten. Old fans will find that the Midnight maelstrom is still alive and new fans will never be able to get enough after listening to this album.
